A Literary Tour of Britain
This is a longer literary tour of Britain that we designed for a college group from New Jersey, incorporating a list of visits that they requested.
As well as including visits to the landscapes of a wide selection of Britain's writers, it visits the three mainland British countries - England, Scotland and Wales.
Day 1 IN FLIGHT
Depart USA for London
Day 2 ARRIVE IN LONDON –CAMBRIDGE - YORK (2 Nights)
Walking tour of Cambridge
Day 3 YORK AND HAWORTH
York Minster. Bronte Parsonage, Moor Walk We often also include an evening Ghost Walk which is both fun and serious (and scary).
Day 4 YORK – DURHAM – BORDERS (1 night)
Durham Cathedral, Chesters Roman Fort
Day 5 MELROSE – BRIDGE OF ALLAN (3 nights)
Abbotsford House (Sir Walter Scott), Stirling Castle, Bannockburn Battlefield.
Day 6 EDINBURGH
Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood House
Day 7 HIGHLANDS DAY
Loch Katrine and Glen Coe
Day 8 AYR – LAKE DISTRICT (1 night)
Burns’ Cottage, Rydal Mount (William Wordsworth)
Day 9 LAKE DISTRICT – STRATFORD (2 nights)
Dove Cottage (William Wordsworth), Grasmere, Aira Force
Day 10 STRATFORD
Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Holy Trinity Church (his grave), Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Tickets for RSC performance in the evening, Backstage tour of the theatre after the performance.
Day 11 STRATFORD – WALES – BATH AREA (2 nights)
Tintern Abbey, Lougharne (Dylan Thomas’ House and grave)
Day 12 BATH
Jane Austen Museum, Roman Baths
Day 13 AVEBURY – STONEHENGE –WINCHESTER – LONDON (4 nights)
Avebury, Stonehenge, Winchester Cathedral (Jane Austen’s grave), Chawton (Jane Austen’s house)
Day 14 LONDON
Westminster Abbey, Thames Cruise, Tower of London
Day 15 DAY TRIP TO DOVER AND CANTERBURY
Dover Castle, Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury Tales
Day 16 LONDON
Additional London sightseeing of your choice such as British Museum, National Gallery, British Library, William Morris House
Day 17 DEPARTURE
Transfer to airport for flight back home
