World War I France and Belgium
This tour takes in the main theatres of war for British forces in World War One. It can be tweaked to take in places of specific interest to the people, units or nations that particularly interest your group. The itinerary as it stands is one that we have operated many times for Australian groups.
Day 1 PARIS (1 night)
Meet group at airport. Lunch cruise on the Seine. Evening attend and participate in the Ceremony of The Flame
Day 2 PARIS / PERONNE (3 nights)
Drive to the Somme area, stopping at Villers Bretonneux, the Australian Monument and Le Hamel and late in the afternoon join the villagers of Herleville for a commemorative ceremony. Then transfer to Hotel St Claude in Peronne.
Day 3 SOMME/NAOURS/AMIENS
Visit to Amiens Cathedral. Caves at Naours dating back to prehistory and used in both world wars. P.m. Le P’tit Train de la Haute Somme
Day 4 SOMME
Tour the Somme battlefield area including visits to Pozieres battlefield including, Brind’s Road walk, the Gibraltar & Windmill sites, Thiepval, Monquet Farm, Ulster Tower, Lochnager Crater, Beaumount Hamel trenches. A sandwich lunch today is included at the Ulster Tower
Day 5 SOMME
Morning visit to the tunnels at Vimy Ridge, a great but costly victory for the Canadians. Afternoon more battlefields as required.
Day 6 SOMME
Today visit the excellent Historial museum in Peronne tracking the history of the 1st World War, also the Australian Second Division Memorial at Mont St Quentin. Visit the Hindenburg Line with a guided walk and the villages of Bullecourt and Hendecourt.
Day 7 SOMME-YPRES (2 nights)
Travel to Ypres where we visit Polygon Wood for a battlefield walk and Messines Ridge. Then onto Ypres where our hotel in Ypres will be Kasteelhof t’Hooghe with a mine crater and trenches in its grounds.
Day 8 YPRES
Excursion of Ypres Battlefields includes Tyne Cot, Passchendale, Hill 60, Sanctuary Wood and the Menin Road. In the evening we will participate in the Menin Gate “Last Post” ceremony.
Day 9 YPRES / LONDON (2 nights)
Morning visit to visit Fromelles, scene of the disastrous Australian battle undertaken by McCay’s 5th Division in July 1916. Visit V.C. Corner Memorial, Then onto Calais for our ferry crossing to Dover and drive to London and our hotel, the Strand Palace Hotel in the Strand.
Day 10 LONDON
Day at leisure to take in the sights of London such as the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Big Ben at the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London or Westminster Abbey. Final dinner together in a London restaurant
Day 11 LONDON / SINGAPORE
Morning at leisure. Late afternoon transfer to Heathrow airport.Singapore Airlines flight home.
